This mini-site of Church Home Group Resources Ltd is devoted to developing a set of resources for home groups. It does not take the form of lots of examples of passages of scripture followed by a set of questions. There are large amounts of these kinds of resources available online and from Christian booksellers. We have even produced one ourselves called Voices of Rwanda. To be honest, however, our experience of such materials is that they are very difficult to use well and very easy to use badly.

A short story

Many years ago one of us attended a home group regularly. At each meeting we would be given a passage of scripture to read and ten questions to answer. We would agonise about each question and often the meeting would run out of time before we had answered all of them

One week we had a new group member. She was called Betty and after twenty minutes spent on the first questions (What does St Paul mean by “strive not to strive”?) we noticed that Betty had not said anything.

“What do you think the answer is Betty?” asked the group leader.

“Well, I think the answer to the first one is ‘don’t be ambitious’, the second one is ‘verse 10’, the third one is ‘no’ and … shall I go on?”

She stopped because e were all starting at her with our mouths open.

“So that’s how you are meant to do it!” exclaimed the leader.

We decided that Christians deserve something meatier than this!

Organisation

The site consists of articles in three main categories: Model, Thoughts and Activities.

Model

This is about our model of home groups, including an explanation of what we think home groups are, some thoughts about what does and doesn’t work and some further ideas about the nature and purpose of home groups.

Thoughts

These are suggestions about practice and thoughts about types of activities and the associated practicalities.

Activities

These are suggestions of actual activities; some thematic, others scriptural and with some theological reflections where appropriate.

Every article has one or more tags to help with searching the site. The categories associated with each article are just one of Model, Thoughts or Activities.
